The MPD K9 Detail is assigned to the Special Operations Section and plays an integral support role for MPD officers in their efforts to keep our community safe.  There are currently 5 multi-purpose K9 Teams that are certified to run drug detection detail and are proficient in tracking wanted suspects in wooded areas and buildings.  MPD K9 Teams routinely deploy with the Mobile SWAT Team as added support as well as assist the United States Marshal Service with serving high-risk search and arrest warrants. 

As part of the K9 Detail, there is one Single-purpose Explosive Detection K9 Team.  The Team’s primary responsibility is to conduct sweeps of an area before large events, such as football games at the University of South Alabama.  Safety of these high-profile events is a main focus.  The Explosive Detection K9 team conducts protective sweeps for the Carnival Cruise Line when their ships are in port.   The K9 team is on call 24-7 to respond to any type of threatening situation involving explosive materials.
